Hair Bleaching
Unwanted hair can be made less visible through bleaching. Bleaching does not remove hair, it allows the hair to blend in. Bleaching works well on hair that is not thick or long. Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient in most over-the-counter bleaches.
Disadvantages of bleaching include:
- Skin irritation.
- Bleaches contain harsh chemicals.
- Bleaching may also discolor the skin.
- Pruritus, the medical word for itch.
- The contrast of bleached hair against tanned or naturally dark skin.
- Repeated bleaching may make hair brittle and actually break off some hairs.
- Reports exist of generalized:
- Urticaria, the medical word for hives.
- Asthma, trouble breathing.
- Syncope, the temporary loss of consciousness due to a sudden decline in blood flow to the brain. (Presyncope means a person feels faint, dizzy, or lightheaded).
- Shock in reaction to the persulfate activator added to boost the effect of hydrogen peroxide bleach.
